Musgrove

The Musgrove surname is not a common one. But I have formed online friendships with some of my ‘cousins’ who link to my line. We share the common thrill of a line that goes back to the Revolutionary War in this country. But, we are also all frustrated that we have yet to find proof of where the Musgrove’s lived prior to coming to America. This is my Musgrove line. If you are related and have other information, please contact me at cindy@diggingforancestors.com.

Descendants of Nathan Musgrove

Generation No. 1

1. MAJOR NATHAN2 MUSGROVE (JOHN1) was born 03 Mar 1758 in Unity, Frederick Co., MD1, and died 07 Jul 1823 in Unity, Montgomery Co., MD. He married (1) ANN CONNER. She died 1831. He married (2) NANCY ANN SELBY 26 Feb 1784 in Frederick Co, MD2,3, daughter of WILLIAM SELBY and MARY ORME. She was born 1764 in Prince Georges Co., MD, and died in Frederick Co., MD.

Notes for MAJOR NATHAN MUSGROVE:
Unity, MD was in Frederick Co, MD. In 1776, Montgomery Co. was formed from parts of Frederick Co.

This Nathan Musgrove is the ancestor who assisted in establishing American Independence, while acting in the capacity of Soldier, Capt. Edward Burgess Company, Frederick County Militia. (Private). Achieved rank of Major in the War of 1812.

See Vol. XVIII Maryland Archives, p. 42.

Nathan Musgrove (1756-1823)
Enlisted 1776 in Capt. Edward Burgess’s company of Frederick Co.
Militia.. Born and died in Unity, MD.

Murdered by his son-in-law, Andrew Duvall (husband of Elizabeth) in 1823. He died intestate.

Nathan Musgrove was the son of John Musgrove who subscribed to the Oath of Fidelity, Montgomery Co., MD, 1776. See Patriots List, Library of Memorial Continental Hall.
Liber B. folio 207

Nathan Musgrove died with the title of officer (Major) which may have been conferred in the War of 1812.

This is not proven, but is one concept of relationship.

Major Nathan Musgrove buried at a private farm in “Sunshine” Cemetary at a farm possibly called “Groomes Farm” near Brookville, MD in Montgomery Co, MD. The grave marker has been destroyed recently (2003) by developers. Iris Hyson (iris.hyson@ces-famco.com) is working to establish an historic marker nearby since the developer won’t allow access to the land.

The first 3 sections of the plantation house built by this Nathan and his father, John, is still standing in Unity, MD. I have not yet located it, but hope to thorugh Iris Hyson.

———————————
In some records found on the internet it shows that Nathan married Ann Selby and then married her sister Nancy. In a publication titled “Selby Families of Colonial America” by Donna Valley Russell, it states that Nathan married a Nancy Selby. A marriage license was issued in Frederick County, Maryland, dated 2/26/1784 for Nathan & Nancy. Other records indicate that Nancy’s middle name was Ann. This may be where the confusion lies, as I find no other record of a marriage for Nathan. According to the publication listed above, Nancy did not have a sister by the name of Ann.

Nathan was killed by son-in-law Alexander Jackson Duvall in an angry altercation. This information came from the Montgomery Historical Society, Maryland.

In 1797 Dorsey Barnes and Lydia, his wife, conveyed to Nathan Musgrove for 37 pounds several tracts of land. Forty acres of Treed Land, 100 acres of Gaithers Purchase, 55 acres of Hannahs Purchase, 25 acres of Addition to Plummers Content, 66 acres of Resurvey on Plummers, 10-1/4 acres of Resurvey on John and Sarah, “all of which lands are in Montgomery County in a fork of the Hawlings River.” Another deed was executed in 1798 from Joshua Plummer and Elizabeth, his wife, to Nathan Musgrove, for 37 pounds, conveying several tracts in a fork of the Hawlings River, including 40 acres of Treed Land, the same tracts conveyed by Dorsey and Lydia Barnes.

Notes for ANN CONNER:
Nathan’s wife’s name is from the DAR application that Janet Grandle sent me. This is not proven.

A historian of the Musgrove family in Mt. Nebo, Grace Matthew, says that John and Susan first came to Sussex County Delaware and then on to Montgomery County Maryland. Grace also believes that John is from the Musgrave clan in Scotland.

Many different land records are found in Frederick Co, MD for John Musgrove. One of these was a deed to John and his wife from Kitty W. Burgess. So John may have spent a good deal of time in Frederick Co, or Frederick was a part of Montgomery Co. at the time.

Slaveholder and owner of large tobacco plantation just outside of
Baltimore MD. Died of Typhoid. Genealogy links beyond this
individual are speculation but have sound
justification.

Notes for SUSANNAH BURGESS:
After the death of John in 1839 ( as well as the death of 3 of their children), Susan came to Western Virginia and lived out her life on the Isaac Hawkins farm.

1860 CENSUS for Marion Co., WV shows Susan living with her son, Nathan Plum Musgrove. She is 54 years old.

Kitty W. Burgess may have been her mother. Land deal between John Musgrove and Susannah Musgrove and Kitty W. Burgess may indicate this relationship.

She is buried in Mt. Nebo cemetery. Date of death according to cemetery records may have been 2-Feb-1866.

Buried in Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Marion County, West Virgina
Moved to West Virginia in 1847 with son Nathan following the death of her husband. Lived on what later became the Isaac Hawkins farm. She freed their slaves prior to leaving Montgomery County, MD, but reportedly some of the freed slaves moved with her. Facts indicated that her brother-in-law James, sister-in-law Rachel, sister-in-law Louisa, son Nathan, and daughter Susan made the move as well.

Children of JOHN MUSGROVE and SUSANNAH BURGESS are:
9. i. NATHAN4 MUSGROVE, b. 01 Jul 1824, Frederick Co, MD; d. 14 Aug 1898, Marion Co., WV.
ii. SUSAN MUSGROVE, d. Unknown; m. PHILIP DOWNS.

Notes for SUSAN MUSGROVE:
Could this be the Susan Stitley living with Susan Musgrove in the 1950 Frederick Co., MD census with a 1 yr old daughter, Susan E. Stitley?

iii. CALEB MUSGROVE, d. 02 Dec 1839, Montgomery Co, Maryland.
iv. CATHERINE MUSGROVE, b. Abt. 1838; d. 18 Dec 1839, Montgomery Co, Maryland.

6. RACHEL3 MUSGROVE (NATHAN2, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1800 in Saint Marys Co., MD, and died 03 Apr 1882 in Marion Co., West Virginia5. She married HEZEKIAH MORAN, SR. 22 Jul 1815 in Montgomery Co., MD, son of JOSEPH MORAN and RACHEL LYON. He was born Abt. 1789 in Montgomery Co., Maryland, and died 24 Oct 1871 in Marion Co., WV5.

Notes for RACHEL MUSGROVE:
Death was 1-APR-1881/1882, according to cemetery records and the Moran family bible as related to me by Janet Johnson (related to Robert Moran, son of Hezekiah and Rachel.)

Buried in Mt. Nebo Cemetery, WV

Henderson M. “Mid” Moran’s great grandmother, Mrs. Hezekiah Moran (Rachel Musgrove) Moran grew up on a plantation just outside of Baltimore. When she was old, she used to tell her grandchildren about the time the British bombarded Fort McHenry near Baltimore. she said they could hear the sound of the cannon all night long and that they ceased the next day. She also said her age was 14 years an this agrees with the time of her birth which was in 1800. (War of 1812?)

Patrick E. Moran’s book, Moran Exodus from Offaly, says that Rachel is the daughter of Benjamin Musgrove. No specific reference sited. I need more inveestigation here.

Another researcher says she was b. in Boldon, Durham, England on 14-Jun-1789 BUT says her father was Nathan Musgrove who was b. in England. probably not right. Nathan’s marriage and all other children b. in MD.

Notes for HEZEKIAH MORAN, SR.:
Hezekiah Moran came to the Mt. Nebo, WV area from Maryland (possibly St. Mary’s County since his parents were married there) in the early 1800’s.

1870 census lists Hezekiah, Sr. as being 76 years old living next door to his son, Hezekiah, Jr. in Marion Co., WV. (Winfield Township)

Moved to Monongalia Co, VA from Montgomery Co, MD

Buried in Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Bunner Ridge, Marion County WV. Near White Day Creek.

LDS Ancestral file shows:

Hezekiah MORAN b. 1793, son of Otha MORAN. Married to Rachel Musgrove, b. ABT 1795. shown in IGI. However, History of Marion Co. shows the father of Hezekiah to be Joseph Hezekiah Moran.

Dyer’s Index to Land Grants in WV 929.3754 shows a land deal with an H. Moran that could have been Hezekiah:

H. Moran 170 acres wts. White Day Creek 1826,#7,p300
(Monongalia Co, WV)

What appears to be this same land shows as going to Robert Moran in 1855.

Some children of Hezekiah, Sr. show as being born in Marion Co. and some in Monongalia. Some are listed for both in the LDS IGI.

Other researcher claims that a Hezekiah Moran b. 1789 is buried in Creston, NE. He supposedly took his family to Nebraska for some land give away.

Notes for NATHAN MUSGROVE:
Known as Nathan J. “Plum” Musgrove.

A Nathan Musgrove was in the 1850 Frederick Co., MD living with a Susan Musgrove census 2 years before my Nathan married Cyrene.

In 1870 Nathan was a farmer in Marion Co. WV. Farm was worth 5000.

Virginians & W. Virginians 1607-1807 Vol. 3. says he was also a teacher.

“Nathan Plum Musgrove was the only member of his family to come to West Virginia (from MD? Didn’t Susan, his mom, come also?). At Old Palatine, near Fairmont, he married Irene (Cyrene) Corrothers, a daughter of Andrew Corrothers. He was reared on White Day Creek, near Smithtown. Her people were farmers, and her brother, John W. Corrothers, was at one time called the timber king of West Virginia., and the family as a whole were very prosperous and substantial people. ”

Nathan is buried in Mt. Nebo cemetery, Bunners Ridge, WV in Marion County.
———————————–
His father died in 1830 [II think Helen Vellinga had this date wrong, probably 1839 ]when he was six years old. He moved to Western Virginia in 1847 when he was 23 years old, after learning of cheap land across the mountains in Marion County, where he purchased a farm for one and one-half cents an acre. He cleared the land, built a log house, then sent to Maryland for his mother and a sister Susan. It was at this time that the Musgrove family freed their slaves.

He lived on what once was the Isaac Hawkins farm. He donated land for construction of Mt Nebo Church. He maintained a garden on a large knoll adjacent to the church and cemetery.
He married when he was 28 years old.

Nathan was a school teacher, as well as a farmer.

KISNER 03 Sep 1885 in Morgantown, WV, daughter of SAMUEL KISNER. She was born 30 Jul 1864, and died 25 Aug 1889 in Marion Co., WV. He married (2) ANNE J. KISNER 14 Jan 1890 in Marion Co., WV, daughter of SAMUEL KISNER. She was born Abt. 1874 in WV, and died 27 Feb 1920.

Notes for NATHAN COLUMBUS MUSGROVE:
Louis Arnold Musgrove says that his great ‘Uncle Columbus’ had a feed store in Grafton, WV. Virginians & W. Virginians 1607-1807 Vol. 3. says he was a mill owner.

Believe him to be the N. C. Musgrove listed in the 1920 WV census as husband of Anna. His age is listed as 62.

NEED TO VIEW CENSUS DETAIL.

History of West Virginia by Callahan confirms he was a mill owner in Grafton along with other activities over the years:

“Nathan C. Musgrove was for many years in the tanning industry” and for 10 years or more was “a mill owner and operator at Fetterman, a suburb of Grafton.

“Mr. Musgrove was born in the Laurel Run community of Marion Co., Sept 18, 1858, son of Nathan Musgrove. His father was born in Frederick Co.. Maryland, in 1824, an din 1849 came to West Virginia. He aquired liberal education, and taught school for a time after settling in Marion Co. He finally established his home on White Day Creek, and continued his life as a farmer there until his death. He was never in politics beyond voting as a democrat and was an active member of the Christian Church. He cast his first vote for General Hancock in 1880 and he voted in every national election since then, voting twiced for Mr. Cleveland and twice for Mr. Wilson. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and was a contributor to the work of the organizaed church in his community. During WWI he was a member of the wholesale committee of teh Food Administration at Grafton, WV.

Nathan Plum Musgrove was the only member of his family to come to West Virginia.

Nathan C. Musgrove grew up on White Day Creek, acquired his education in the Laurel Run country school and after reaching his majority left home and for a time was a coal miner in Westmoreland Co, PA. He then returned home home and built a tanyard on Laurel Run, and took up the industry, which was satisfactory in that locality for 19 years.”

His plant produced 1000 hides annually for use in harnesses and rough leather in Baltimore, Wheeling and other markets in the east.

When he abandoned the tan yard it went into disuse and practically disappeared by 1923. On leaving his old home, Mr. Musgrove moved to Fetterman and erected a feed mill. He did custom grinding and handled flour, feed, sugar and salt by the wholesale.

He was one of the charter members of the Jerry Run Coal Company, and in 1923 was a stockholder in the Grafton Banking and Trust Company.

During the World War he was a member of the wholesale committee of the Food Administration of Grafton.

He cast his first vote for General Hancock in 1880.
